Dr. Muri Berates Governors’ Calls For State Police, Insist Constabulary Police Will Serve Better

A lecturer at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina State, Dr. Aliyu Muri, has condemned the call by some state governors for the establishment of state police.

Muri disclosed this on Thursday at the late M.D. Yusuf Memorial Lecture in Katsina with the theme: “The contribution of police in curbing insecurity as it affects socio-economic sectors in Nigeria”.

He said governors may misuse state police if allowed to have any.

According to him, governors would used the state police when established to intimidate and harass their opponents or perceived enemies.
Rather he called for the creation of a special unit of constabulary police under the Nigerian Police Force with the aim providing adequate security to Nigerians.

He said, the establishment of the unit will not be expensive for the government as there will be a lot of volunteers to serve the nation.
“The categories of people that will serve under the constabulary police unit are civil servants that will give their contribution in policing their communities especially in the nights,” he said.
